Have you noticed a bony lump located at the back of your heel? If so, this could be Haglund’s Deformity. Haglund’s Deformity occurs when the bones become enlarged on the back of the heel. Serious complications can result, including irritation of surrounding soft tissues, if Haglund’s deformity is not properly treated.
Visiting a podiatrist is a good idea if you notice a bony lump or any unusual growth. Elizabeth E. Auger, DPM has an office in West Jordan so it is easy to come in and find out what your foot problems are.
Haglund’s Deformity occurs when a bony enlargement forms on the back of your heel, often due to the pressure and irritation of your heel rubbing against the back of your shoe. The condition is also called Pump Bump because women who wear high-heel pumps are especially at risk.
When you develop Haglund’s Deformity, this bony enlargement can lead to inflammation of the bursa, which is a fluid-filled sac separating bone from the tendon. Inflamed bursa causes substantial pain, and the uncomfortable condition that results is called bursitis.
If you have Haglund’s Deformity, you may experience lots of pain in your heel. When you look at the heel to identify the cause of the discomfort, you will typically notice swelling and redness along the back of the heel. There will also be a noticeable bump near where the heel and Achilles tendon attaches.
If you experience the symptoms of Haglund’s Deformity, getting treatment becomes important. Dr. Auger will conduct a thorough exam, which could include x-rays to determine the heel bone’s structure. Once you have been officially diagnosed, Dr. Auger will help you to consider both surgical and non-surgical treatment approaches.
Non-surgical treatments could include applying ice to reduce swelling; taking medication to reduce inflammation and discomfort; completing appropriate stretching exercises; undertaking physical the, and using equipment such as heel pads or lifts. Shoes may need to be modified, and orthotics may be necessary to control how the foot moves.
